Volkswagen is recalling 84,432 vehicles because their backup cameras can fail to display an image.

The company tells federal safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “Various software errors may lead to a delay or blackscreen of the rearview image or the system may not start up at all.”
The company says it knows of no accidents or injuries blamed on the problem, but it “has received 499 warranty claims” related to it.
Dealers will install a software patch to fix the issue. Software problems can mean a quick service appointment. But these cars can’t download the update over the air, so owners will need to bring them in for the patch.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
